Struggling to Lose Weight? Here's How to Find Your "Why"

Struggling to Lose Weight? Here's How to Find Your "Why"

March 17, 20269 min read

I'm sure every time you've started your weight loss journey you've thought. "this time will be different."

You start every new diet motivated.

You've made the decision to get serious about losing weight.

You plan your meals, promise yourself you'll avoid the late-night snacks, and feel confident that you're finally going to stick with it.

But then, life always happens.

Whether it's a, stressful day a work, rushed evening, maybe you're tired, overwhelmed, or just looking for a little comfort after a long day, there's always something that's bound to throw you off.

And before you know it, you're reaching for the same foods and falling back into the same habits you were determined to change.

And the even more frustrating part is that you already know what to do!

You know eating more veggies would help.

You know drinking more water and moving your body regularly makes a difference.

And you know consistency matters more than perfection.

But knowledge alone rarely creates lasting change.

If it did, no one would struggle with smoking, overeating, or skipping workouts.

Real change happens when something deeper is driving your actions - something powerful enough to keep you moving forward even when motivation fades.

That deeper reason is your "why."

And when you understand WHY you truly want to change (not just WHAT you want to change) you give both your rational mind and your emotional instincts a reason to move in the same direction.

And that's when lasting change finally becomes possible.

Why Knowing WHAT To Do Isn't Enough

If losing weight was simply just about knowledge, most people wouldn't struggle with it.

After all, the information is everywhere.

You already know that eating more veggies will help you.

You already know that drinking more water is better than soda.

You already know that regular exercise improves your health.

And yet, knowing all these things doesn't automatically translate into doing them.

Why?

Because our decisions aren't controlled by logic alone.

Psychologists often describe the human mind as having two systems that influence our behavior.

The first is the rational mind.

This is the part of you that plans ahead, sets goals, and thinks about the future.

It's the voice that says:

"I'm going to start eating better."

"I'm going to stick to my plan this week."

But there's another system operating at the same time... The emotional and instinctive part of the brain.

This system cares less about long-term goals and more about what feels good right now.

It's the part of you that says:

"Today was stressful. I deserve a treat."

"One snack won't matter."

Psychologist Jonathan Haidt describes this conflict using a powerful metaphor: the Rider and the Elephant.

The Rider represents your rational mind.

The Elephant represents your emotional, instinctive side.

The Rider is excellent at planning, analyzing, and setting goals.

But the Elephant is much stronger.

And when the two disagree, the Elephant usually wins.

This is why so many people feel stuck in the cycle of starting and stopping diets.

Your Rider might want to lose weight, eat healthier, and stick to a plan.

But if your Elephant isn't emotionally invested in that goal, it will eventually pull you back toward comfort, convenience, and familiar habits.

They key to lasting change isn't forcing the Elephant to obey.

It's giving the Elephant a reason to move in the same direction as the Rider.

And that reason is your "why."

Why It's So Hard to Stay Motivated to Lose Weight

Most people believe their biggest problem with weight loss is their motivation.

They think:

"If I could just stay motivated, I'd finally lose weight."

So, they try to create more motivation.

They watch inspirational videos.

They start a new program.

They promise themselves that this time they'll be more disciplined.

And for a little while, it works.

At the beginning of any new diet or plan, motivation is usually high.

You feel excited about the possibility of change.

The plan feels fresh.

The goal feels achievable.

But motivation is a temporary emotion.

And like all emotions, it fades.

A stressful week at work, a busy schedule, poor sleep, or a difficult day can quickly drain the motivation you started with.

Suddenly the things that felt easy a week ago start to feel much harder.

Meal prep becomes inconvenient.

Workouts feel like a chore.

And the habits you were determined to change begin creeping back in.

This is why relying on motivation alone rarely leads to lasting change.

Motivation might get you started, but it's rarely strong enough to keep you going.

Real consistency comes from something deeper than motivation.

It comes from having a reason that matters enough to you that it continues to guide your decisions even when you don't feel motivated.

That deeper reason is your "why."

When your goals are tied to something emotionally meaningful (something that truly matters in your life) your choices stop depending on how motivated you feel in the moment.

Instead, they become aligned with the person you want to become.

And that's when change starts to last.

The Real Reason Most Diets Fail

Most weight loss goals start with a number.

"I want to lose 10 pounds."

"I want to fit into my old clothes."

"I want to get down to a certain weight."

And on the surface, these seem like strong goals.

But in reality, they're often too shallow to sustain long-term change.

A number on the scale might feel motivating at first, but it usually isn't powerful enough to carry you through the difficult moments (the stressful days, the late nights, the social events, or the times when life feels overwhelming.)

When your only motivation is a number, it becomes easy for your brain to justify small exceptions.

"One snack won't matter."

"I'll start again tomorrow."

"I deserve this after today."

And over time, those small moments add up.

This is where many diets fall apart.

Not because people are lazy or undisciplined but because their goals never connected to something emotionally meaningful.

Lasting change usually happens when weight loss becomes connected to something deeper.

Maybe it's wanting to feel confident in your body again.

Maybe it's having more energy to keep up with your kids.

Maybe it's wanting to stop thinking about food all day and finally feel at peace with your habits.

Those motivations carry far more emotional weight than a number on a scale.

And when your goals connect to something that genuinely matters to you, your decisions start to change naturally.

A Simple Exercise to Discover Your "Why"

If you're not sure what your deeper motivation is yet, try this simple exercise.

Start with your original goal:

"I want to lose weight."

Then ask yourself one question:

Why?

Whatever answer comes up, ask why again.

For example:

💬 I want to lose weight → Why? → Because I want to feel more confident.

Why does that matter?

💬 Because I avoid social situations.

Why does that matter?

💬 Because I don't feel comfortable in my body.

That final answer is often much closer to your true motivation.

Your "why" is rarely about the number on the scale.

It's usually about how you want to feel, how you want to live, or the kind of person you want to become.

And when that reason becomes clear, your actions start to feel less like punishment and more like progress.

Why Your "Why" Makes It Easier to Stick to a Diet

Once you understand your deeper reason for wanting to change, something important begins to shift.

Your decisions stop relying entirely on motivation.

Instead of constantly asking yourself, "Do I feel like doing this today?" you start asking a different question:

"Is this helping me move toward the person I want to become?"

That small shift changes everything.

When your goals are tied to something meaningful (like having more energy, feeling confident in your body, or building a healthier relationship with food) your daily choices start to feel less like restrictions and more like progress.

Skipping a workout no longer feels like breaking a rule.

It feels like moving further away from something that matters to you.

Choosing healthier meals stops feeling like punishment and instead it becomes an investment in the like you want to build.

This is where the Rider and the Elephant begin to move in the same direction.

Your rational mind still sets the plan.

But now your emotional instincts have a reason to support it.

And when those two systems work together, consistency becomes much easier.

Not perfect.

But so much more sustainable.

Where Most People Get Stuck

Even when people discover their deeper motivation, they often run into another problem.

They try to change everything all at once.

They overhaul their entire diet.

They eliminate all their favorite foods.

They commit to intense workout routines and rigid meal plans.

And for a few weeks, they push through with pure willpower.

But eventually the plan becomes exhausting.

Life gets busy.

Motivation fades.

And they fall back into the same cycle they've experienced before.

This is why so many people feel like they're constantly starting over with their health and weight loss goals.

The problem isn't that they don't care enough.

And it's not that they lack discipline.

It's that they never built the simple habits and systems that make healthy choices easier to maintain in real life.

The Better Way: Start With the Basics

If you've ever felt stuck in the cycle of starting a new diet, falling off track, and starting again, the solution usually isn't another diet.

It's going back to the fundamentals.

The habits that make healthy eating and lifestyle changes sustainable.

That's exactly why I created the Back-to-Basics series.

It's a step-by-step guide designed to help you rebuild the foundations of healthy eating and lifestyle habits without extreme dieting or unrealistic rules.

Inside the guide, you'll learn things like:

  • How to build simple meal planning routine

  • How to reduce decision fatigue around food

  • How to create an environment that supports healthier choices

  • How to develop habits that actually stick

Instead of trying to overhaul your entire life overnight, the focus is on small, practical changes that compound over time.

Because lasting progress doesn't come from short bursts of motivation.

It comes from building habits you can maintain for the long run.
